Frequently Asked Questions for Emergency Dentistry

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency requires immediate attention in most instances. Certain injuries to your teeth or gums can become serious, leading to further damage. It's important to contact your dentist immediately or go to the emergency room for treatment for a dental emergency.

What is the most common emergency in the dental office?

The most common medical emergency in the dental office is syncope (more than 50%), followed by mild allergic reaction (8%), angina pectoris (8%), postural hypotension (8%), and seizures (5%). Approximately 75% of dental professionals will witness or manage syncope in their careers.

Is a cavity a dental emergency?

At the early stages, a cavity may not be considered a dental emergency. However, if left untreated, it can progress and lead to more severe issues. As the decay penetrates deeper into the tooth, it can reach the sensitive inner layers, including the dentin and pulp.

Why should you deal with a dental emergency quickly?

The pain you experience from "waiting it out" may be worse in the long run. Infections can spread, broken teeth can cause further damage to the surrounding gums and tissues, a lost filling can become infected, or a cavity can form.

Is a toothache considered a dental emergency?

If you have a toothache that lasts more than 1-2 days and is causing you a lot of pain or discomfort, you're having a dental emergency. This usually indicates an advanced cavity or an infected tooth. Without proper care, your condition will only get worse.

How much does it cost?

We accept most dental insurances and have payment plan options to fit your budget!

“I have been coming to Phantastic Smiles for maybe around 20 years. 16 years ago, I got a composite job done on my front tooth after I chipped half of it off as a child. This was supposed to be a temporary replacement, but has lasted 16 years so far and holding up well!”

Paolo Tursi

“Dr. Phan and his entire team are wonderful! The office is clean and technologically advanced. They really focus on providing comprehensive care and pay special attention to all the small details. I was given a customized treatment plan, and they were transparent about what items needed to be prioritized first. My visits have been pleasant and efficient. I recommend Phantastic Smiles to anyone seeking superb oral care.”
